Designed for NGSS
Rhode Island science standards are based on the Next Generation Science Standards. Since standards often get teachers grunting and groaning, we’ve done the hard work for you to further minimize the time it takes you to prepare for your lessons and classes. All of our science curriculum programs are designed for NGSS, meaning that every part of our curriculum integrates NGSS, ensuring that your students learn what they need to know both to pass your class and to do well on standardized tests. Our elementary and middle school science curriculum also gives you access to NGSS correlations so you can see exactly which standard is being taught where.
Phenomenon-based storylines provide real-world problems for students to connect their learning with their own experiences. Investigations, reading notes, and key science concepts enable students to explore, explain, and make sense of phenomena.
Engineering Challenges and investigations engage students to design solutions directly relating to Disciplinary Core Ideas.
Three Dimensional Learning
Each and every lesson focuses on at least one Science and Engineering Practice, one Disciplinary Core Idea, and one Crosscutting Concept. Each dimension is selected to support learning as it relates to the Performance Expectation.
Anchoring Phenomena and Storylines
Each unit in our middle school and elementary science curriculum introduces the key concept of the unit with a storyline and an anchoring phenomenon. This helps students relate smaller concepts throughout the lessons back to the main idea that encompasses the entire unit.
Anchoring phenomena prompts engagement by encouraging students to make connections with the world around them, then later ties back during the Performance Assessment. Additionally, each lesson has its own phenomena which work together as part of the storyline to build conceptual understanding of the anchoring phenomenon. Anchoring phenomena are introduced with an embedded video, such as this example.
Each lesson also includes a main idea to help students further understand and grasp the concepts being presented. Both our elementary and middle school science curriculum include these lesson-level phenomena to help students really explore the foundational concepts and make big ideas more manageable and understandable.
3-Dimensional Lesson Investigations
Rhode Island science standards are based on NGSS and centered around the three dimensions of science learning that NGSS has implemented. This three-dimensional learning ensures that teachers across the country are adhering to the same standards and educating students on the same basic things as they are teaching science each year. Science and engineering practices make real-world connections to actual scientists and the methods they go through to do their jobs. Crosscutting concepts help students realize that many concepts apply to a variety of scientific fields, and they help students use their prior knowledge of general scientific ideas to understand new ones. Disciplinary core ideas teach that connections can be made within particular scientific disciplines and that some foundational science knowledge will apply to every branch of science that exists.
Bead a bracelet to replicate how mutations can change the structure and thus the function of a protein.
Grow plants with and without water or light to determine what plants need to grow.
Develop a model that shows the relationship between particle motion and states of matter.
Students love doing investigations in class, and our engineering challenges allow them even more hands-on experience in the science classroom. When you are teaching science and get to demonstrate mind-blowing experiments to your students, you’ll also get to see the light bulb go on for many students as concepts finally click and they truly grasp what you’re teaching.
Design, build, test, and modify a structure for dispersing seeds that mimic how plants disperse seeds in nature.
Build an earthquake table and then design the tallest structure possible while still being quake-resistant.
To ensure students understand the details of big concepts, they should be assessed regularly with both formal and informal assessments. TCI’s science curriculum comes with customizable lesson-level assessments for you to use however you desire—as quizzes, reviews, tests, homework, and more.
NGSS has changed how students are assessed. Lesson Assessments include a variety of selected response and constructed response questions that incorporate the 3-Dimensions, core ideas, practices, and crosscutting concepts. You’ll be provided with completed answer guides and rubrics. View how tightly we align with the NGSS correlations. Questions are designed to mimic the CAST format. Students practice taking assessments online to prepare for state tests.
Everyone with any experience teaching science knows that demonstration of concepts is an important part of complete understanding. Performance assessments are an important part of any good science curriculum as they help you gauge your students’ ability to grasp important ideas and concepts.
Each unit of Bring Science Alive! includes a Performance Assessment. The activities, written and oral assignments allow teachers to assess student understanding of science contents within the context of the phenomenon discussed during the unit storyline. By using a performance task, teachers can assess across three-dimensions a student’s ability to engage in Science and Engineering Practices, apply Crosscutting Concepts and to understand Disciplinary Core Ideas. The Performance Assessment not only allows teachers to assess student learning but gives students a chance to demonstrate their learning in a meaningful way.

Our science curriculum programs integrate Rhode Island science standards, which are in line with NGSS. Our elementary science curriculum strives to bring science alive by presenting foundational scientific concepts in an interesting and interactive way. Our middle school science curriculum further expands students’ foundational knowledge of science by delving deeper into earth science, physical science, and life science. We want students to love learning about science, but we also want them to make real-world connections between what they’re learning from our science curriculum and the world that exists outside the classroom.
