Lessons Aligned with NGSS
All TCI science curriculum is aligned with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and Kentucky science standards. We know you need to cover those Kentucky standards, so we’ve integrated them into every single lesson, presentation, activity, and assessment within our science programs. You can view the NGSS correlations and how they correlate into each unit, allowing you to spend less time on NGSS and Kentucky science standards and more time on teaching and interacting with your students.
Explaining Phenomena Phenomenon-based unit storylines provide real-world problems for students to connect to their own experiences. Investigations, the Interactive Student Notebook, and Key Science Concepts enable students to explore, explain, and make sense of phenomena.
Designing Solutions Engineering Challenges and investigations present to students problems directly relating to Disciplinary Core Ideas. Students strive to design solutions to these problems.
Three-Dimensional Learning Each and every lesson focuses on at least one Science and Engineering Practice, one Disciplinary Core Idea, and one Crosscutting Concept. Each dimension is selected to support learning as it relates to the Performance Expectation.

Anchoring Phenomena and Storylines
Unit-level phenomena introduce each new unit by helping students connect scientific concepts to the real world. The storylines through the units connect back to that anchoring phenomena to help students make connections while they explore Kentucky science standards and the three dimensions of NGSS.
Anchoring phenomena prompts engagement by encouraging students to make connections with the world around them, then later ties back during the Performance Assessment. Additionally, each lesson has its own phenomena which work together as part of the storyline to build conceptual understanding of the anchoring phenomenon. Anchoring phenomena are introduced with an embedded video, such as this example.
With each lesson is a lesson-level phenomenon, encouraging students to further delve into the scientific practices they’re studying. These relate to the unit-level phenomena, combining all the different aspects of the units into a few big ideas that students can focus on.
3-Dimensional Lesson Investigations
Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) have a three-dimensional learning focus for science, and all of our science curricula are centered around the Kentucky science standards that align with NGSS. Crosscutting concepts encourage students to explore similarities across the main branches of science, disciplinary core ideas relate key ideas in science to each different branch of study, and science and engineering practices allow students to have hands-on experience as they learn about what real scientists actually do.
Bead a bracelet to replicate how mutations can change the structure and thus the function of a protein.
Grow plants with and without water or light to determine what plants need to grow.
Develop a model that shows the relationship between particle motion and states of matter.
Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are at the heart of our engineering challenges. Watch students grow as they work collaboratively to solve real-world problems with learned scientific concepts.
Design, build, test, and modify a structure for dispersing seeds that mimic how plants disperse seeds in nature.
Build an earthquake table and then design the tallest structure possible while still being quake-resistant.
Assessments can be completed after each lesson to ensure Kentucky students are on track throughout each unit. Use these to gauge student understanding and retention, all while making sure the standards have been met.

Lesson Assessments include a variety of selected response and constructed response questions that incorporate the three-dimensions: Disciplinary Core Ideas, Science and Engineering Practices, and crosscutting concepts. Lesson Assessments include a variety of selected response and constructed response questions that incorporate the 3-Dimensions, core ideas, practices, and crosscutting concepts. Students practice taking assessments online to prepare for state tests.
Use as many or as few of our science assessments as you desire, and use them as a teaching tool to gauge student levels of understanding and their application of the scientific concepts.

Our elementary school science programs are designed to engage students from kindergarten through fifth grade while teaching them basic science practices established by NGSS and in line with Kentucky science standards. Our middle school science programs help students explore earth science, life science, and physical science in a variety of unique and fun ways that help them learn effectively.
