Designed for NGSS
Everyone who has any experience teaching science knows that the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) are the foundation for all science learning in the state of Kansas. Our elementary and middle school science curriculum programs seamlessly integrate the Kansas science standards and NGSS into each aspect of our curriculum. This makes every part of your job simpler since you no longer have to comb through standards and apply them to everything you do in your classroom. All of our ready-to-use lessons, presentations, assignments, activities, and assessments are in line with NGSS and the Kansas science standards, and we even supply you with NGSS correlations so you can cross-reference and notate where each standard is being applied.
Phenomenon-based storylines provide real-world problems for students to connect their learning with their own experiences. Investigations, reading notes, and key science concepts enable students to explore, explain, and make sense of phenomena.
Engineering Challenges and investigations engage students to design solutions directly relating to Disciplinary Core Ideas.
Three Dimensional Learning
Each and every lesson focuses on at least one Science and Engineering Practice, one Disciplinary Core Idea, and one Crosscutting Concept. Each dimension is selected to support learning as it relates to the Performance Expectation.
Anchoring Phenomena and Storylines
In order to encourage as much engagement and retention as possible, our science curriculum begins each new unit with an anchoring phenomena. This helps students relate various details of the unit back to this key idea and helps them to see scientific concepts in a broader view and a real-world application.
Anchoring phenomena prompts engagement by encouraging students to make connections with the world around them, then later ties back during the Performance Assessment. Additionally, each lesson has its own phenomena which work together as part of the storyline to build conceptual understanding of the anchoring phenomenon. Anchoring phenomena are introduced with an embedded video, such as this example.
Elementary and middle school science curriculum programs by TCI also include lesson-level phenomena to further break down the larger essential question. This makes learning foundational concepts more manageable and helps those who are teaching science to explain material in a comprehensive and interconnected way.
3-Dimensional Lesson Investigations
Next Generation Science Standards, which are in line with Kansas science standards, have come up with three dimensions of science learning to ensure that educators everywhere are teaching science in a complete way with various approaches. These three dimensions ensure more thorough engagement of students and encourage more active participation in learning. Disciplinary core ideas, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts make up the three dimensions. These help students grasp that certain scientific concepts apply to all scientific fields and that connections are to be made across scientific disciplines and within the real world. They also ensure that hands-on experimentation is done within the classroom so that students can experience what real scientists do on a daily basis.
Bead a bracelet to replicate how mutations can change the structure and thus the function of a protein.
Grow plants with and without water or light to determine what plants need to grow.
Develop a model that shows the relationship between particle motion and states of matter.
One of the best parts of any science class is the hands-on experiments. TCI has taken those experiments a step further to provide real-world opportunities to experience scientific concepts in the classroom. Engineering challenges are a part of all middle school and elementary science curriculum programs, and they teach students about collaboration, problem-solving, teamwork, critical thinking, and much more.
Design, build, test, and modify a structure for dispersing seeds that mimic how plants disperse seeds in nature.
Build an earthquake table and then design the tallest structure possible while still being quake-resistant.
Kansas science standards and NGSS must be met on a lesson-level basis and a unit-level basis. Our customizable lesson assessments are available to you as you fine-tune the way you’re teaching science and checking your students’ understanding of core concepts.
NGSS has changed how students are assessed. Lesson Assessments include a variety of selected response and constructed response questions that incorporate the 3-Dimensions, core ideas, practices, and crosscutting concepts. You’ll be provided with completed answer guides and rubrics. View how tightly we align with the NGSS correlations. Questions are designed to mimic the CAST format. Students practice taking assessments online to prepare for state tests.
Performance assessments are an important part of any science curriculum. They allow students to apply what they’ve learned in a practical way and show that they understand the concepts being taught.
Each unit of Bring Science Alive! includes a Performance Assessment. The activities, written and oral assignments allow teachers to assess student understanding of science contents within the context of the phenomenon discussed during the unit storyline. By using a performance task, teachers can assess across three-dimensions a student’s ability to engage in Science and Engineering Practices, apply Crosscutting Concepts and to understand Disciplinary Core Ideas. The Performance Assessment not only allows teachers to assess student learning but gives students a chance to demonstrate their learning in a meaningful way.

We want students to not only learn, understand, and remember what they learn through our science curriculum, but we want to foster a love of learning in young scientists of all ages. Our elementary science curriculum teaches the youngest learners about the foundational concepts at the heart of every scientific field, giving them a solid baseline of knowledge from which to build on. Our middle school science curriculum introduces core ideas in physical, life, and earth science, encouraging students to further their understanding of the world and to prepare for future classes and life experiences that deal with science.
