Designed for CA-NGSS
Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and California science standards are integrated into every aspect of TCI’s science curriculum, making it easier for you to prepare your class time and teach your students, and making it easier for students to stay interested and actively learn the core concepts required by California science standards. Throughout each unit and individual lesson, you can view the table of contents, which shows you exactly what California science standards are being taught, or you can check out an overview of NGSS correlations that show which skills and concepts are address in which units.
Explaining Phenomena Phenomenon-based storylines provide real-world problems for students to connect their learning with their own experiences. Investigations, reading notes, and key science concepts enable students to explore, explain, and make sense of phenomena.
Designing Solutions Engineering Challenges and investigations engage students to design solutions directly relating to Disciplinary Core Ideas.
Three Dimensional Learning Each and every lesson focuses on at least one Science and Engineering Practice, one Disciplinary Core Idea, and one Crosscutting Concept. Each dimension is selected to support learning as it relates to the Performance Expectation.
Anchoring Phenomena and Storylines
Our California science standards-based curriculum also utilizes investigative phenomena at the start of each unit to help the students connect what they’re learning to the real world.
Anchoring phenomena prompts engagement by encouraging students to make connections with the world around them, then later ties back during the Performance Assessment. Additionally, each lesson has its own phenomena which work together as part of the storyline to build conceptual understanding of the anchoring phenomenon. Anchoring phenomena are introduced with an embedded video, such as this example.
Throughout the different lessons, phenomena that is specific to that lesson will be explored, and each will reflect back on the unit-level anchoring phenomena and storylines from the beginning of the unit.
3-Dimensional Lesson Investigations
Every lesson, unit, and assessment touches on the three dimensions of science learning set by CA-NGSS. Students explore science and engineering practices, which helps them understand what scientists do. They learn crosscutting concepts that teach them to explore the connections across all fields of science so they gain a more complete understanding of the world. They also discover disciplinary core ideas, which are the key concepts and ideas across all scientific fields and disciplines. All of these CA-NGSS dimensions are integrated into TCI’s science curriculum so that you don’t have to worry about finding them and applying them to your lessons, activities, and assessments.
Bead a bracelet to replicate how mutations can change the structure and thus the function of a protein.
Grow plants with and without water or light to determine what plants need to grow.
Develop a model that shows the relationship between particle motion and states of matter.
Engineering challenges encourage critical thinking and problem solving, allowing the students to work towards creating solutions to common problems and utilizing their knowledge of key science concepts covered in California science standards.
Design, build, test, and modify a structure for dispersing seeds that mimic how plants disperse seeds in nature.
Build an earthquake table and then design the tallest structure possible while still being quake-resistant.
Assessments at the end of each lesson assist you in knowing where your students stand with the comprehension of the newest material. These customizable lesson-level assessments will be a key factor in teaching effectively and setting your students up for success.
NGSS has changed how students are assessed. Lesson Assessments include a variety of selected response and constructed response questions that incorporate the 3-Dimensions, core ideas, practices, and crosscutting concepts. You’ll be provided with completed answer guides and rubrics. View how tightly we align with the NGSS correlations. Questions are designed to mimic the CAST format. Students practice taking assessments online to prepare for state tests.
Performance assessments can overwhelm students, but our customizable tests allow you to best prepare your students to not only do well on the exam, but also to actually learn and understand key concepts.
Each unit of Bring Science Alive! includes a Performance Assessment. The activities, written and oral assignments allow teachers to assess student understanding of science contents within the context of the phenomenon discussed during the unit storyline. By using a performance task, teachers can assess across three-dimensions a student’s ability to engage in Science and Engineering Practices, apply Crosscutting Concepts and to understand Disciplinary Core Ideas. The Performance Assessment not only allows teachers to assess student learning but gives students a chance to demonstrate their learning in a meaningful way.

TCI’s California science programs incorporate all the CA-NGSS required for your students’ grade level. Our elementary school science curriculum includes Bring Science Alive! programs that are grade-appropriate and teach students basic science practices required by California science standards. Our middle school science curriculum includes Bring Science Alive! programs that cover California science standards in the disciplines of earth science, life science, and physical science. From space to ecosystems to matter, all CA-NGSS standards are utilized in our middle school programs to engage students and get them excited about learning scientific concepts.
